Almost every other woodworking project gets easier once you have a stable, flat surface to work on. A workbench does not need fine joinery or expensive materials to do its job well. It needs to be sturdy, roughly the right height for you, and square. This plan uses basic dimensional lumber, straightforward butt joints reinforced with screws, and a design you can build in a weekend.
What you will need
- Construction-grade lumber: four legs, four aprons (the frame connecting the legs), and several boards for the top.
- Wood screws (exterior-rated is fine for a shop bench).
- Wood glue for reinforcing joints.
- A drill/driver, a saw (circular or handsaw), a combination square, clamps, and a tape measure.
- Optional: carriage bolts if you want a knock-down bench you can disassemble later.

Step 1: Decide on dimensions
Pick a height that matches how you work. Somewhere between 34 and 38 inches is comfortable for most people doing hand tool work standing up. A length of about 48 to 60 inches and a depth of 24 inches is a practical size for a first bench: big enough to be useful, small enough to fit in most garages or basements.
Write your final numbers down before cutting anything. Measuring once and cutting to a plan avoids the most common beginner mistake, which is cutting pieces as you go and ending up with a base that will not sit square.
Step 2: Cut the legs and aprons
Cut your four legs to the same length. This single step matters more than any other for a stable bench: if the legs are even slightly different lengths, the bench will rock. After cutting, stand all four legs on end together and check that the tops line up.
Cut the aprons (the horizontal boards that connect the legs into a rectangle) to match your planned length and depth, accounting for the width of the legs at each corner.
Step 3: Build the base as two identical ladders
Rather than assembling all four legs at once, build two matching end frames first. Attach one apron between two legs on each end, checking the assembly for square with a combination square before driving screws. Reinforce each joint with wood glue in addition to screws.
Once you have two solid end frames, connect them with the long aprons running front to back. Check for square again at this stage by measuring corner to corner in both directions. If the two diagonal measurements match, the base is square.
Step 4: Add the top
Lay your top boards across the base and check the fit before fastening anything. A simple top can be several boards run side by side (screwed down from underneath so no fasteners show on the work surface) or a single sheet of plywood if you want a completely flat surface with fewer gaps.
Screw the top down into the aprons from underneath, spacing fasteners every 12 to 16 inches along each apron. Avoid glue between the top and base if you might want to replace the top later.
Step 5: Add bracing if needed
If the bench feels at all wobbly once assembled, add diagonal bracing at the corners underneath, or a lower shelf connecting all four legs partway down. A lower shelf is also a convenient place to store clamps and tools, and the added weight helps keep the whole bench planted.
Finishing touches
A shop workbench does not need a fine finish. A coat of leftover paint or a simple penetrating oil on the top will help it resist glue drips and moisture without adding cost. Some builders leave the top completely unfinished so glue squeeze-out can be scraped off cleanly.
