How to Build a Floating Shelf (Beginner Plan)

A floating shelf looks like it is holding itself up on the wall, with no visible brackets or supports underneath. The illusion comes from a hidden bracket hidden inside the shelf itself, anchored into the wall studs. It is a satisfying beginner project because the build is simple, but getting it to sit level and hold real weight takes a bit of care. Here is a straightforward plan for building one from a solid board.

What you need

  • A board thick enough to hide a bracket inside, generally at least an inch and a half thick, or a hollow shelf box built from thinner boards
  • A hidden floating shelf bracket, sized to the shelf’s length and rated for the weight you plan to hold
  • A stud finder
  • A level

Step 1: Decide on solid or hollow construction

A solid board gives you a simple, sturdy shelf, but it needs to be thick enough that you can drill into its underside without breaking through the top. A hollow box, built from four thin boards glued and joined into a rectangle with a bottom panel, is lighter, uses less material, and still looks solid once finished. For a first shelf, a solid thick board is the more forgiving choice because there are fewer joints that can fail.

Step 2: Drill the bracket holes into the shelf

Hidden brackets typically have several rods or pegs that need matching holes drilled into the underside of the shelf, spaced to match the bracket exactly. Measure twice before drilling. Use a drill bit sized to the bracket’s rods, and drill straight in, checking your angle from more than one side as you go. Test-fit the bracket in the shelf before you move to the wall. It should slide in snugly with no wobble.

Step 3: Find your studs and mark the layout

Use a stud finder to locate studs in the area where you want the shelf. Mark their centers lightly in pencil. If the shelf is long enough to span two studs, that is ideal, since it spreads the load and adds real holding strength. If only one stud is available, center the bracket on it and use rated anchors for any additional mounting points.

Hold the bracket against the wall at the height you want, and use a level to mark a level line before you drill anything. A shelf that is even slightly off level will be obvious and irritating every time you look at it.

Step 4: Mount the bracket to the wall

Drill pilot holes into the studs at your marked, leveled positions, then screw the bracket firmly into the wall. Check it with the level again once it is mounted, since it is much easier to adjust now than after the shelf is on. Give the screws a final check for tightness. Step 5: Slide the shelf on and secure it

Slide the shelf onto the mounted bracket, checking that the pre-drilled holes line up cleanly. Most hidden brackets rely on a tight friction fit, but many plans also call for a dab of wood glue or a small screw driven up through the bottom of the shelf into the bracket for extra security. Wipe away any excess glue immediately.

Let any glue cure fully before you put weight on the shelf. Once it is set, give it a firm test push and a modest test load before loading it with anything valuable or breakable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the stud finder. Anchors alone are fine for light decorative items, but for books or anything heavier, studs matter.
  • Drilling bracket holes off-center. Small errors compound, so measure from a consistent reference point on both the bracket and the board.
  • Not leveling before drilling into the wall. Fix the level, not the shelf, after the fact.
  • Overloading a shelf mounted with anchors only. Match the load to what your bracket and wall anchoring can actually support.

Finishing touches

Sand the shelf smooth before mounting, since it is much easier to work on it flat on a bench than once it is on the wall.
