Tearout is the splintered, ragged edge you sometimes get on a cut, right where you wanted a clean line. It shows up most on plywood, but it happens on solid wood too, and it is one of the most common reasons a beginner project looks rough even when the joinery is fine. The good news is that tearout has a handful of predictable causes, and each one has a straightforward fix.
Why tearout happens
A saw blade does not slice wood cleanly all the way through. As each tooth exits the bottom or the far face of the board, it can lift and snap fibers instead of shearing them, especially if those fibers are not well supported. That lifting action is what tears the surface. It gets worse with:
- Cross-grain cuts. Cutting across the grain (as opposed to with it) exposes more fiber ends that can catch and tear.
- Thin veneers. Plywood’s face veneer is only a fraction of a millimeter thick, so it has almost no strength to resist tearing.
- Dull or wrong blades. A dull blade pushes and tears fibers instead of cutting them. A blade with too few teeth for the material does the same.
- Fast feed rate. Pushing a saw through the cut faster than the blade can shear cleanly increases tearout.
- No support underneath. Wood or veneer with nothing backing it up flexes and splinters as the blade exits.
Cut with the good face down (for circular saws)
A circular saw’s blade spins so the teeth enter from the bottom of the board and exit through the top. That means the top face gets the roughest treatment. If you are using a circular saw, place the good, visible face down so any tearout happens on the face nobody sees. On a table saw, the relationship is reversed since the blade exits through the top, so keep the good face up.
Score the line before the full cut
For plywood or any cut where the finished edge matters, score along your cut line first with a sharp utility knife, pressing just deep enough to slice through the top veneer. This severs the surface fibers before the blade gets there, so there is nothing left to tear. It takes an extra minute and prevents most edge splintering on visible cuts. This pairs well with a straightedge clamped to the board as a saw guide.
Use painter’s tape on the cut line
A strip of painter’s tape laid directly over the cut line adds just enough surface tension to hold veneer fibers in place as the blade passes through. Cut through the tape along with the wood, then peel it away. It is a cheap, reliable trick for plywood edges especially.
Back up the cut
Whenever possible, support the underside of the board right along the cut line. A sacrificial scrap of wood or a dedicated zero-clearance insert on a table saw closes the gap the blade would otherwise exit into, so fibers have something to shear against instead of flexing loose. For handheld cuts, clamp a piece of scrap directly beneath the cut line.
Match the blade to the material
A general-purpose blade is a compromise. For clean cuts, especially in plywood or hardwood, a blade with more teeth (a higher tooth count) shears more finely and leaves a smoother edge, at the cost of cutting slower. Keep the blade sharp: a dull blade is one of the single biggest causes of tearout, and swapping or sharpening it solves more problems than any technique adjustment.
Slow the feed rate
Let the blade do the work. Pushing a saw through a cut faster than it can cleanly shear the fibers is a direct cause of tearout, particularly at the very end of a cut where there is less material left to support the exit point. Ease off as you approach the end of a cut rather than pushing through at full speed.
If tearout still happens
Minor tearout on an edge that will be sanded or covered is not worth stressing over.
